Aren’t you done yet?

You have how many kids?

You’re pregnant again?

You do know what causes that, right?

Aren’t you done yet?

Nine in May, God willing.

Yep. Kind of amazing, isn’t it?

Oh, yeah. For sure.

Couldn’t tell you.

See, once upon a time (we’ll call it six kids ago), we were done. And then we weren’t. And now …

Well, here we are.

P1460250

We didn’t wake up one day and aspire to a number. We didn’t set a goal. Heck, we didn’t even know if our openness to more would translate into more children or not. But we knew that our hearts had changed, and we were no longer quite so sure that our idea of  “our perfect family” lined up with God’s.

So we just started walking, one day at a time. And nearly ten years later, I look around and I think, “I almost missed this.”

Five of the most beautiful little people I’ve ever met. Three miraculous pregnancies that have taught me how precious every kick and wiggle can be. Two trips through the courtrooms where law, not biology, decreed me a mother. Another heart-wrenching, blessed bond with a gorgeous girl who calls me “Mum” across a lifetime of miles.

I could have missed it all. But I didn’t. We call that grace.

What I don’t miss? Being a minivan-sized family. Taking advantage of “Family FourPacks.” Fitting in a single hotel room.

All that stuff that once seemed to be game-changers, all those lines in the sand … not even on the radar, as it turns out. Truth be known, I don’t even mind the inquiring glances and the nosey questions. If you see us out and about, feel free to ask away.

But be forewarned: we’re a terribly honest bunch around here. And if you ask a question, you’re going to get an answer. You might like it, you might not. So if you’re the type that feels comfortable asking about our bedroom habits, be prepared, ok?

  1. Some people make such rude and odd statements. I don’t get it. I love seeing your family. I love seeing any families when I’m out. They make me smile and I try to catch an adult eye and tell them I think their family is beautiful. Or that I love the new pair of shoes or such. It makes my day happier.

What blessings you have! I get excited and thrilled each time a niece or nephew announces an
addition. I wish I could treat you all like my own nieces & nephews.
