To read

Five times now, I have held a child on my lap as his or her tongue wrapped itself around the letters their brain was processing into words. Five times now, I have been humbled to experience the absolute stunning transformation that brings my little ones from well, little, to getting big.

Each time–whether it’s happened overnight, without much effort at all, or painfully, as the child struggles to take captive those rogue sounds and force them into stories– I have felt, quite literally, like the most blessed woman in the world. Watching the world open, one book at a time, to my children has been one of the greatest joys in my life. Being part of those moments, not abdicating them to professionals … I had no idea when I began homeschooling how much this process would mean to me.

I still have a few more pre-readers to usher into the world of literacy. But somehow, I doubt that I’ll ever lose the thrill and the gratitude of teaching  child to read, no matter how many times I am blessed to be a guide.

  1. I have just taught my two oldest to read and what a joy it is to see the world open up to them! What a heart warming sight to see them spending time curled up with a book. It makes homeschooling SO worth it.
