Seven Turns Nine

Birdie— known as Seven since before her birth— turns nine today. Nine. I’m not at all sure how nearly a decade has slipped by since I first looked into that impossibly chubby, serious little face. I’m equally unsure as to how I ever thought our family was remotely complete without this spunky, sweet girl in the mix.

And so, we begin

School is now officially, firmly in session this week. The rhythm is not there yet, but the heart is– and so far, I’d say 2016-17 is promising. The Lord clearly has lessons in mind: lessons in patience, in grace, and being a good student even when you don’t like the skill being taught. And those, by the way, are all for me.

Seven is five

We called her Seven, in the incredulous days and weeks following the positive pregnancy test. Years of longing unfulfilled had helped us realize that pregnancy is no promise that a baby will fill your arms. We rejoiced in every day but held that delight loosely, with open hands, as if God deciding to take this one, too, would somehow hurt less that way.
