Some days, you need something different. Something to break up the rainy afternoon, to keep antsy, rough hands busy. To distract you from the fact that yes, it’s still February.
Some days you make bread.
You gather little ones, conspiratorially. You remind them of the Sun Bread book, one of their favorites. Then you whisper, “Let’s surprise the big kids.”
A sponge is started. Flour measured. Salt sampled.
A dough comes together.
And now, you wait, playing Colorful Caterpillars and running to the stairs time and again to make sure the big kids stay upstairs, tied to their schoolwork.
Finally, you knead.
This is the good part. Fingers in sticky dough, white flour finding its way onto cheeks, boredom forgotten.
Into the oven.
And out.
Before the prize can be announced, big kids wander down, drawn by the scent of fresh-baked bread. Honey and butter find their way to the table. And …
The day is somehow made magical with barely any effort at all.
Wonderful! Simply wonderful. 🙂
What a fun way to break up the misery that is February. How is it that the shortest month can drag on so long? Probably exacerbated by my delivery a mere 8 weeks away. But that doesn’t help my kids be any less antsy! I think we need a bread-making break!
Hey! I missed out!
