Today’s high is only supposed to hit 50 degrees, and I, for one, am thrilled. These temperatures are made for three things: knitting, making hearty cool-weather meals, and cozying up with the people you love. Oh, autumn, how my heart welcomes you this year!
Speaking of cool weather meals, we made Farmer Boy’s Bird’s Nest Pudding Friday evening and it was a hit.
I made an apple for everyone, and even though I somehow lost track of the recipe as I bounced between helping John Mark with it and finishing off the bread for dinner, it turned out beautifully and was very much enjoyed by all. (For reference, I had him add the powdered sugar to the batter instead of the leftover brown sugar. It would have had a richer crust and more dense pudding with the brown sugar, but was still quite delightful under a scoop of vanilla ice cream!)
The kids loved sampling a bit of literature on their plates, and marveled that Almanzo was able to eat two servings of Bird’s Nest Pudding after a full meal. I reminded them that in the spring, when we are getting the fields ready for planting, or on the days when we put fresh mulch in the chicken yard and deep clean the coop, they each seem to eat their own weight at supper.
They agreed then that maybe it wasn’t so far fetched after all.
Finally, something I haven’t shared:
Jack is home! Our Airman made an earlier than expected return, and we are thrilled. I can’t tell you the squeals of happiness that surrounded his homecoming, but I bet you can picture it. He was greeted with dozens of homemade signs (the one above was from John Mark) and lots of love. And pie. He is currently under required quarantine, and will be back at his Air National Guard duties soon. He’s ours until January, when he leaves for college. That means that when the semester breaks in three weeks, I will have the joy of three of my adult kiddos home for a month and a half.
God is good, friends.
Wow! Rejoicing with you. I’m so excited that you get to have him home for so long!
My oldest came home today. We will get to see all four boys before Christmas!
