We’ve completed two adoptions, and both of them were drawn-out labors of love spanning years. Ask us if we regret a moment, and both Christopher and I would be shocked that you’d even asked. As a matter of fact, since being back in the States, both of us have expressed a burden for foster children that, were I a betting kind of girl, I’d wager will eventually wind its way back to a licensing office and a home study in a few year’s time.
Once you’ve experienced the blessing of adoption, this strange thing happens. The mystery is gone. It’s normalized. And you start to forget how scary it was back in the beginning … and you start wondering what it is that holds others back from diving into the waters you’ve already felt wash over your head.
It’s this normalization that drives so many adoptive families– ours included– to become advocates for this life-changing act. Pretty much everyone who expresses an interest gets a brief sales pitch for the joys of growing your family via adoption– just ask the sweet young nurse at my OB’s office. Our constant refrain? We are not special. God is in control. This ocean of kids needing parents isn’t too much to address. Just … do something.
But we can only talk to so many people. And only so many folks see the living, breathing billboard for open hearts that is our family. So how do we reach out and normalize adoption to a society unsure exactly what is involved? How do we convey the miraculous moments contained in every adoption story? How do we show God’s provision, and His absolute sovereignty in the lives of entire families made more rich through the blessing of just one (or two, or three, or five) more?
How about a movie?
Just as “The Drop Box” recently brought the calling of a simple pastor serving abandoned children in South Korea to life for so many Christians here in the US, a project-in-process is seeking to do the same for the simple yet radical act of adoption. The best part? Since it’s still in the works, you can step up and be a part of doing something to bring the message to audiences nationwide.
Through our relocation, we have been blessed to meet a bunch of lovely people who have taken the road less travelled in terms of family. Led by Christ, they’ve done some things– crazy things– that make us feel right at home. Two of those families are actively involved in bringing one of those stories to life as a testimony to the amazing things God has done in their lives. And we’re talking amazing … because that’s the only word I can come up with for an adoption that takes only five days.
Five days, guys.
Before you ask, yes, I can vouch that these are real people. I can also say that, having heard the story behind “The 5 Day Adoption,” hearts will be changed. This is a powerful, true example of God asking a family to step out into unknown waters and making clear the path for His will to be done.
You want to see this movie.
So let’s get it finished. Seven days remain to finish funding this awesome project. Let’s get it into theaters. Let’s get it into the hearts and minds of Mommas and Daddies who need to hear an inspiring story that places the whisper of God in their ears. Let’s put it in front of our children, so they grow up with adoption as such a part of life that it never occurs to them to resist if the Lord should call them to be a part of His story in that way. Let’s share it with adopted children everywhere, so they can see, firsthand, how God loved them so much that He put His fingerprints all over His plan for their life.
Let’s do something. Support “The 5 Day Adoption” here!
I hope they get the funding they need it sounds like a terrific movie.
