I was given a free product in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated in any other way for this post. All thoughts are my own and represent my experiences in using this product.
As you might have guessed, I am a very big fan of getting as much bang for my buck as possible. As you can also probably guess, I’m looking for quality. Affordability means I can fit our needs within a tight, one-income budget. And things made with materials that will last mean that I can reasonably expect to get decent usage with multiple children. Score!
Part of the problem (in my opinion) with cloth diapers is the move toward “collectibility.” As modern cloth went mainstream and pockets overtook the landscape, adorable prints drove the price point for a single diaper higher and higher, leaving behind a whole segment of the population who might have bought in to reusable diapering, but couldn’t stomach the idea of spending $30-40 for a single go on the changing table.
And then an ingenious thing happened. Folks began to revisit the old “diaper and a cover” idea, but this time, they added an updated twist. Hence, the AI2 (All-in-2) concept— a cover (usually called a “shell”) with a removable diaper (usually called an “insert”). Now, instead of a cloth diaper having one run and going in the pail, the same shell could expect a few changes of the insert before retiring for the day. Frugality at its best!
There are a good number of AI2s on the market these days. Price—and quality— varies wildly. One in particular that has me excited is Buttons. Why? Because they get it.
First, Buttons has shown an awareness of family needs by offering several configurations for purchase. Starting a stash from scratch? A complete package (covers, inserts, wipes, and a wet bag) starts at $215. Just need a few extra inserts to get you through? A microfiber one is $3.50. Just want some covers to put over your prefolds? You can do that, too. A la carte diapering? Yes, please!
Second, the prices at Buttons are on the low end. No, they’re not the reviled “China cheapie” $4.50 diapers. But solid covers are $11, and prints are $12.50. That puts your starting price at $21.50 for a cover and three inserts— in other words, 3 diapers for just over $20!
But are they worth it? After 6 weeks of near-daily use, I can report that yes, Buttons diapers live up to the hype.
The quality I mentioned earlier? It’s here. The covers are lovely, thick double-layered PUL without the exposed shine inside of other brands. Double gussets keep messes in without chafing. Wicking hasn’t been an issue, and we have yet to experience a compression leak, either. The snaps are solid, and the rise settings seem just about right for my chunky, 16 pound, 7 week-old. (Yikes!) Buttons says their covers fit from 9-35 pounds, making this a one-size cover.
I’ve tried our Buttons cover over a Goodmama for nighttime, prefolds, and flats. I’ve gotten a good fit every time. Also? Their prints are super cute. Ours is Thicket, and it’s Mary Hannah’s favorite.
We tried a hemp/cotton insert, and have been pleased with its trimness and capacity. Although Jude has earned the title “Super Soaker,” he hasn’t leaked yet. We haven’t had staining, either. Because inserts snap in, there’s no bunching or wiggling. Buttons offers doublers, as well, for an additional charge.
Buttons has found a way to offer a great product in an easily-accessible way at a fabulous price. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since this “company” is actually a family-run business. People who set out to provide the kind of products and service that they themselves are looking for usually hit the mark. Buttons certainly has.
Buttons is generously offering To Sow a Seed readers the chance to win one cover + one daytime insert. Enter below for your chance to win!

We only have 2 Button’s diaper covers, But I love them! I like that they have a little stretch to them, and the double PUL and double gussets are awesome! I love that they have 2 new colors coming recently!
I’ve yet to have a button diaper but would love to show it off. I love that the company is family run. Finger crossed for the win 🙂
