God knows.
No matter how many times I remind myself of that fact, I still struggle to fill in the blanks under my own power.
But God knows.
Mathaus wants to make movies. It’s a rather specific, rather far-off dream, in many ways. If he wanted to be an accountant, an electrical engineer … if he wanted to fix cars for a living, well, I’d know in which direction I should be pointing him.
But movies?
How does a homeschool family on a very limited budget prepare a son for a career doing a thing for which there is so little offered in the way of extra-curricular support? There’s stuff out there, for sure. It’s usually pretty pricey, and often far away. But still– what if this is his big calling, his true purpose … and we miss the boat?
God knows.
How else do you explain this:
Within a 7 mile radius of our house, there are 21 church options. Yet we felt called to join a community 20 miles away. Turns out, not only is the congregation chock full of larger families and homeschoolers, but one member is a filmmaker. And that guy? Turns out, he’s currently making a movie centered on God’s work in the lives of another family in the church.
See? God knew.
Recently, Mathaus got the chance to fiddle with lights, do continuity work, and watch the magic happen. It was a priceless opportunity to test his passion against the reality of the job, which is invaluable to young men casting a vision for their future. Mathaus walked away with even more interest in the field, and an even greater sense of how God can use this medium to impact the world for His glory.
And, you all … I did nothing to arrange this. I didn’t set it up. I didn’t ask if he could be present for the filming. I didn’t even go along for the ride! But it happened, because God has a plan, and His plans always work out better than ours, anyhow.
God knows. Remind me of this next time I worry, o.k.?

That’s fantastic! God is pretty awesome how He works that stuff out [smile].

I just said “God knows” to a friend a few minutes ago, an encouragement to her in her circumstances and something I try to remember in my own. 🙂
