Sometimes, you make a good call.
Sometimes you look around and you think, “Huh. I think the best way to handle this really not hugely important thing is XYZ.” And you go forward, and you kind of hope it pans out, because really, you don’t know. Either way, it’s not life-altering. It just is.
But then it turns out that you were right. It was the right way to go. And you’re pretty pleased with that.
This has been schooling year-round for us.
It was a good call.
Unaccustomed to week upon week of temperatures in the upper 90s, I realized last year that maybe we’d be better served as a family by adjusting to our surroundings a bit more. So we dove in to year-round scheduling — and have thrived under the new rhythm. We were “on” in August, September, and October. Then November rolled around and the weather? Glorious. Unlike the endless days of 98 degrees, melted Otter Pops, and whining children draped listlessly under the shade of wilting trees, we found a hint of crispness to the air, field trips we actually managed to endure without heat stroke, and a happy balance between life indoors and out.
We were back on in December, January, and February. And guess what? March— and our newest break— dawned with an absolute glorious burst of spring that we couldn’t wait to explore.
If you don’t hear from us, we’re busy doing our favorite things. Tinkering. Knitting. Coloring. Exploring. Mowing. (Seriously, that is Mathaus’ chosen outside occupation and yes, he is for hire.) We’re busy soaking in the sun and listening to the birds sing, finding new parks and trails, checking out freebie events and locations while the bulk of the population (homeschooled and not) are engaged in the more traditional routine.
Sometimes I make decent calls. Not always. But sometimes. And year-round schooling? It was a good one for this season of life.
I’m with Mathaus. Mowing the lawn is my favorite!
