God’s timing is a concept I don’t think I’ll ever understand.
Months ago, feeling the call to travel again to Haiti and take my son, Jack, with me, it was clear God was the one talking.
So we made the plans. We bought the tickets. We even collected about 750 toothbrushes to distribute to children in some of the villages we’d be visiting.
Then my back went out. And God was again clear. Today, rather than traveling to the airport to board a plane to Miami to meet up with the rest of the team for the final leg to Port-au-Prince, I’m sitting at home nursing my injury, wondering if my back will be well enough to travel to Nepal in December.
Sitting here with me is Jack, wondering when he will next have the chance to leave the country.
The thing is: God knew. Despite calling us, despite us answering the call, God knew we weren’t going to be traveling to Haiti today.
And while we may not be quite fine with it, He is.
The toothbrushes will still be making their way to Haiti. The U.S. Postal Service’s Priority Express option made sure of that. Those of you who collected, donated and sent us toothbrushes, rest assured, they will soon be finding themselves in the hands (and mouths) of those in need.
But Jack and I will wonder what would’ve been, while he waits for God’s hand to show him another way to serve, and I wait for His sure hand to heal me.
Together, we can kick around the “why” of it all, but like many things in life, neither of us need wait for an answer. Rather, we’ll remain steadfast in His sovereignty, trusting that whatever comes to pass in the days ahead, it will all be for His glory. And that’s good enough for us.
Your trust in His sovereignty is encouraging to our faith. We will pray for healing and for the Lord to lead your and Jack’s next steps.
