We had a half-way decent snowfall last week.

It was lovely.

Of course, it stuck around just a bit too long for my personal liking, messing up schedules and setting things just the tiniest bit off-kilter. But I am in the vast minority; most of the members of my family would take a full winter quite happily. Me? I grew up with a guarantee of six months of snow and am rather fond of the kind that comes and goes in less than a day.

Still, witnessing our own little patch of ground transformed by snowfall is magical. Like the creek, which is most often viewed in the hottest months, when we are in desperate need of the feel of cold water running over our naked toes.

Mathaus surprised me by being the first of the older kids to venture out while the snow was still falling. Even though he looks more like his Daddy than he does me, Mathaus inherited my preference for a static 70 degree day with a slight breeze. Still, he spent a nice chunk of the day out with us, laughing and drinking in the snow.

Naturally, the five youngest thought it was amazing.

In a few weeks, they’ll be loving winter all the more; the Winter Olympics begin on February 9th, and I’ve decided to repeat a fun unit study the older kids and I enjoyed in 2010. This time, I’ll be using a free printable activity book from Sonlight. Since it’s written for just 9 days, I can space it out a bit as we watch curling, speed skating, the bi-athlon, then learn about flags, geography, and traditional foods.

Let the Games Begin!

Who knows? Maybe it will even snow again.
