It’s not just the eggs, folks. While our kids have gotten some priceless lessons in economics through our family’s chicken farming experience, keeping these birds truly has been the gift that keeps on giving. For example, my kids have learned:
1. Don’t be afraid to not follow the crowd. Sure, 17 other hens just ran into the corner to see just what that stub of carrot was all about. But guess what? In their rush, they missed this lovely clump of grated broccoli. See what blessings befall those not caught up in chasing the next big thing?
2. Listen when the Big Guy crows. There just might be a hawk circling overhead. Heed the warning of the authority placed over you, and live to see another day.
3. If you just accomplished something awesome, sing your happy song loud and proud… and move on. The physical exertion of laying an egg is praiseworthy. There’s nothing wrong in pointing it out, and patting yourself on the back. But no one appreciates that one hen who cackles over her egg for half an hour. After all… everybody lays their own eggs, too.
4. Poop is a part of life. It just is. Get over it.
5. Be humble and kind, because at the end of the day, you might need to share a bedroom with your nemesis. No one’s job is more important than anyone else’s, and no one’s spot in line is sacred. We’re a family, and God’s plan has iron sharpening iron, not to mention the same people doing life together day after day.
